Topic: Update on Adhesion: Research and Clinical Applications

Professor Junji Tagami was educated at Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU), achieving his DDS in 1980 and his PhD in 1984. He was appointed to the Professor and Chair of Cariology and Operative Dentistry, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences at Tokyo Medical and Dental University in 1995. He is still responsible to manage the activities of the department.

He is a prolific author who has contributed more than 450 papers to peer-reviewed international journals and some 200 papers to Japanese academic journals in the fields of cariology, tooth-colored dental restorative systems, the bonding of materials to dental tissues, and dental education. His background in research on the mechanism and structure of caries is believed to be one of the most important factors orienting adhesion as a means of achieving minimally invasive dentistry.

The development of the Optical Coherent Tomography(OCT) for dental diagnosis and application for laboratory material testing is one of his outstanding achievements in recent years. As the chair of Cariology and Operative Dentistry, he has supervised over 150 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from Japan and around the world in the past 20 years, some of whom have become prominent academicians themselves in Japan, North America, Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia. Because of his contribution in dental research and education, he was awarded Honorary Degrees from King’s College of London and Mahidol University in Thailand, and the distinguished scientist award, Wilmer Souder Award, from IADR.

Dr. Raymond L. Bertolotti

Topic: Adhesion Bridges, a proven alternative to implants.

Raymond L. Bertolotti received his D.D.S. degree from the University of California, San Francisco, after working as a Ph.D. metallurgical and ceramic engineer at Sandia National Laboratories. He is currently Clinical Professor in Biomaterials Science at the University of California currently Honorary Associate Professor at Warwick University in England.

Perhaps best known for introducing “total etch” to North America in 1984, he also introduced Caries Detector in 1984, Panavia in 1985, tin plating in 1989, self-etching primers in 1992, and Healozone in 2004. The sectional Contact Matrix system, “Microprime”, “Microetcher” sandblasting and intraoral tin-plating are also his innovations.

Dr. Bertolotti has published extensively in journals such as the American Dental Association, International Journal of Prosthodontics, Journal of Dental Research and Quintessence International, as well as authoring four dental textbook chapters. He co-authored a new book, Supra-Gingival Minimally Invasive Dentistry: A Healthier Approach to Esthetic Restorations. Dr. Bertolotti is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dental Materials, a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and an Accredited member of the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He is a well known international lecturer, having presented invited lectures in over 30 countries.

Dr. Alireza Sadr D.D.S., Ph.D.

Topic: The Science of Restoring a Structurally-compromised Tooth

Dr. Sadr is an Associate Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, University of Washington School of Dentistry (UW) in Seattle, WA and Adjunct Associate Professor of Cariology and Operative Dentistry, Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) in Japan.

He is the director of operative dentistry pre-clinical training at UW. Dr. has been actively involved in research and development of dental materials such as self-etching adhesives, adhesive resin cements, novel composites, and tooth remineralization agents.

He is focusing on research towards the adoption of advanced technology, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) into the clinical practice of dentistry. Dr. Sadr has published over 160 scientific articles with his colleagues from across the world, presented his research and trained many dentists in advanced operative dentistry internationally. Dr. Sadr’s research projects have been funded by the government, industry and non-profit organizations in Japan and the United States.

Dr. Simone Deliperi

Topic: An Excursus on SRDC Restorations: long-term clinical results.

Dr. Deliperi graduated from the University of Cagliari in 1998 and completed the Esthetic Dentistry fellowship at Tufts University in 2000. He was recognized at graduation for contributions to research by receiving the AACD (American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry) Student Research Award. He has served as a visiting faculty at Tufts University since 2001; at the moment, he is an “Adjunct Assistant Professor”.

Dr. Deliperi has been a member of the IADR (International Association of Dental Research) since 2001; he has presented research works at the IADR/AADR meetings and was repeatedly selected as an oral session co-chair. He has authored several scientific publications on biomimetic and aesthetic dentistry in peer-reviewed journals since 2002. He serves on the editorial boards of the Operative Dentistry Journal, the Journal of Esthetic & Restorative Dentistry and the PPAD.

Dr. Deliperi is a national and international lecturer; he has been providing continuing education and hands-on courses on restorative and biomimetic dentistry both in Europe and the USA for the last 15 years. He is presently on faculty at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and is a Scientific Advisor for the Academy of Biomimetic Dentistry; he maintains a private practice and operates a teaching center (The Sardinia Dental Teaching Center) in Cagliari, Sardinia- Italy.

Topic: An Excursus on SRDC Restorations: long-term clinical results.

“Excursus” is a latin origin word that means “digression”. This lecture aims to be like the appendix of a book on Biomimetic Dentistry. It will cover the 10-year clinical performance of Stress-reduced Direct Composite (SRDC) resotorations (from JADA 2002 to Operative Dentistry Journal 2017). The lecture will overview either the clinical protocols or the clinical data of SRDC restorations both in the anterior and posterior area.

Clinicians will understand how to preserve the remaining sound tooth structure in both medium, large size restorations and multiple cusp-replacing restorations as well as in devital and discolored teeth. By maximizing the bond and minimizing the stress, we can perform restorations able to either resist the mode of failure or mimic the performance characteristics of the intact natural tooth even in the most structurally compromised teeth!

Dr. Grant Chyz D.D.S.

Topic: Clinical Techniques for Direct Fiber Reinforced Composite Restorations

Dr. Chyz earned his D.D.S. degree in 1983 from the University of Michigan. Dr. Chyz maintains a general practice, with an emphasis on biomimetic dentistry, in downtown Seattle.

Dr. Chyz has been involved in various study clubs over the years and lectures on direct restorative dentistry and cracked teeth. He has consulted with 3M on many products, but most notably on the development of Filtek Supreme. He serves as an unpaid consultant to Ribbond. Finally, Dr. Chyz first laminated Ribbond to internal tooth structure in 1999 – giving him a unique, long-term perspective on the value of fiber lamination to augment direct restorations.

Topic: Clinical Techniques for Direct Fiber Reinforced Composite Restorations

For an individual tooth, restorative choices are driven by many factors, but more than anything else, it is by the presence or absence of cracks and the amount of remaining tooth structure. Traditional guidelines for direct fillings lead to destructive removal of sound tooth structure.

By incorporating Biomimetic Principles with the use of strategically laminated continuous fiber, we create a new paradigm where sound tooth structure can be preserved. This lecture will focus on direct restorations, placed to minimize damage to sound tooth structure, minimize wear and to maximize esthetics and durability.
