What You Will Learn

The goal of biomimetic dentistry is to conserve tooth structure and save teeth; we can achieve this by drawing on research from the field of engineering when considering the structural analysis of a tooth. Small cracks grow larger over time with micromovements, and complete removal, where possible, is recommended. Large cracks in teeth can lead to decay, sensitivity, root canal treatments and tooth loss, so understanding crack prevention and treatment through the lens of conservative dentistry can prevent invasive treatments.

In this lecture, Drs. David and Davey Alleman start with outlining how cracks form and how to identify them. The next step is treatment. Being able to gauge the severity of the crack, direction and risk it may pose to the root will guide your recommendations for the patient. When removing a crack, understanding the Peripheral Seal Zone and Central Stop Zone concepts allows doctors to treat cracks predictably without risking the vitality of the nerve.

Finally, restoring the tooth biomimetically, with a bond strength similar to that of a natural tooth, prevents future cracks from forming because the tooth bends and flexes like a natural tooth and the adhesive bonds prevent bacteria from entering under the restoration.

With systematic crack removal, clinicians will have the confidence to treat one of the most common pathologies in the field and see more predictable restorations as a result.

About Dr. David Alleman and Dr. Davey Alleman

Dr. David S. Alleman, DDS has over 40 years of experience as a dentist, currently practicing in Utah, USA. After seeing the results of traditional dentistry — symptomatic restorations that failed over time — he spent over eleven years pioneering the development of noninvasive dental procedures that addressed these concerns while conserving tooth structure. Dr. Alleman has condensed over 1,400 research articles into his Six Lessons Approach to Biomimetic Restorative Dentistry. This approach offers dentists a set of protocols to perform biomimetic restorations start to finish, providing alternatives to full coverage crowns and an end to sensitivity and recurring retreatment. Dr. Alleman has been using biomimetic procedures in his practice for more than 20 years.

In recent years Dr. Alleman has presented at Congresso Internacional de Odontologia Biomietica in Manaus, Brazil, Congreso Internacional de Odontologia Restauradora Biomimeitca in Santiago, Chile, the International Congress on Adhesive Dentistry in Konya, Turkey, the American Institute of Oral Biology in Palm Springs, CA, and Dental Influencers Alliance 3.0 in Atlanta, GA, among others, and taught at workshops in Hungary, India, Lithuania and at the Alleman Center in Provo, UT.

In 2024 Dr. Alleman will be presenting at the Utah Dental Association 2024 Conference in Salt Lake City, UT, International Dental Exhibition and Meeting (IDEM) in Singapore and the 2nd International Congress on Dental Specializations in Riobamba, Ecuador and teaching at workshops in Colombia and Ecuador.
