Dr Clayton is a passionate dentist turned change maker. He wasn't always this way, however. In dental school he highly considered dropping out after feeling disillusioned and saddened by the conventional methods of dentistry. He felt there had to be a more conservative way of fixing teeth. He decided to finish dental school, work hard to pay off school loans, and then reconsider a career shift at that point.
He thanks Instagram for the passion he has developed for dentistry. It was Instagram that first showed him the art of composite veneers and the amazing results that can be possible without cutting down teeth for crowns or porcelain veneers. Eventually, that social media algorithm started showing him photos of what would have been considered "extreme" and "non-evidence based dentistry. Photos of crowns that were bonded to teeth broken off at the gumline. Something he was taught wasn't possible, that only a big post in the tooth root could hold onto a crown in these cases. Which all dentists know have a limited life span, a "hail Mary" of dental procedures.
He found the accounts of masters like the Allemans, Pascal Magne, Matt Nejad, Simone Deliper, and Steven Schiffenhaus. Practioners and scientists who have mastered the art and science of biomimetic dentistry. He began connecting with biomimetic colleagues and quickly became obsessed with this truly modern and ultra-conservative form of dentistry. He had found his passion.
In his clinical practice of dentistry, Dr Clayton became troubled by the amount of patients he was seeing with cavities that did not check the traditional boxes of a high cavity risk patient. They did not eat processed sugars, sip on sodas or juice, or lacked in their oral hygiene, in fact they flossed and brushed as if it were a religion. They consumed whole foods and some were obsessed to the degree that they only bought local organic produce, grass-fed and pasture raised meat, raw dairy products etc. But over and over he met with distraught families who were getting cavities and had kids with abscessed teeth. The only true "risk factor" they had in common, that he could identify based on what he had been taught in school, was not using fluoride. Surely this could not be the deciding factor between severe cavities and health!
He desperately looked for resources to answer his questions and began to find answers through resources including books, scientific articles and a passionate disrupter and cariologist with a goal to cure the disease. It was a huge relief to him! Dr Clayton began sharing the message of multifactorial approach to cavity prevention and the use of biomimetic dentistry to repair damaged teeth so that the dentistry lasted as long as possible.
To say the public was ready for this message was an understatement. Within a year his social media followers grew to be over 300k with multiple videos hitting over a million views. They connected with the message of comprehensive prevention strategies, the reality that caries disease can be treated and cured (absence of symptoms), and more conservative treatment options such as onlays over crowns, fiber reinforced and stress reduced fillings, and long term successful techniques such as immediate dentin sealing.
He feels it an honor to be an accredited member of this change-making academy with a goal to increase the visibility of biomimetic dentistry and create demand for it among the patient population, as well as influence other dentist to learn more. He plans to continue to educate, advocate for change, and work towards fellowship with the academy.
His dental practice is focused on total wellness dentistry, blending the best of biomimetic, biological, holistic, and conventional dentistry. He focuses on identifying the root cause of oral disease (including gum disease, occlusal disease, and caries disease) and healing this cause, while treating with science-backed and modern treatment.
Dr Clayton looks forward to meeting you and helping you on your oral health journey!
