/ Listings / Grant T. Chyz, D.D.S.
Dr. Chyz earned his D.D.S. degree in 1983 from the University of Michigan. He practiced as an associate in Boston and Seattle before opening his own office in downtown Seattle, where he has been caring for patients since 1986. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Washington State Dental Association, the Seattle-King County Dental Society and the Academy of Biomimetic Dentistry, where he is also on the scientific advisory board. Dr. Chyz has been involved in various study clubs over the years and has valued the opportunity to draw on the experience of an exceptional group of colleagues in treating his patients. In 2000, Dr. Chyz joined “The Counsel for Innovative Dentistry”, a small advisory group to 3M (later 3M ESPE). This experience opened his eyes to the global dental market and the dynamics of product development for dentists of all skill and education levels from the entire world. In 2001, this experience was amplified when Dr. Chyz was the sole private practicing (not nationally or internationally known) dentist invited to join a small group to help guide 3M in the final 2 years of their development of the innovative, nano-filled composite, which was to become Filtek Supreme. In 1999, Dr Chyz first laminated an ultra high molecular weight polyethelene fiber product (Ribbond) intercoronally to strengthen a highly compromised tooth. Over time, research validated the benefits of this concept and today the use of fiber-reinforced direct composite restorations is gaining popularity among dentists who are focused on tooth preservation. In private practice and in lectures, Dr. Chyz shares his passion for “tooth preserving” direct structural adhesive restorative dentistry. This includes managing tooth structure as well as cracks, UHMWPE fiber reinforcement, and skillful management of composite resin to restore teeth. He serves as an unpaid consultant to Ribbond. Dr. Chyz contributes to operative dentistry training at the University of Washington School of Dentistry as an affiliate instructor and collaborates with Dr. Alireza Sadr in research on the diagnosis and treatment of cracked teeth and fiber-reinforced composite restorations at B4T research lab.
